The fifth edition of the Val-de-Grâce Seminar aimed at approximating the global approach of emergence of new infectious pathogens, their comparison to other risks of different nature, and the study of crisis situations and major ruptures induced by emerging infectious diseases (EID).
Two keynote conferences inaugurated and ended this year’s Seminar. One was given by Dr Peter Daszak (President of EcoHealth Alliance and chair of the USAID-EPT-PREDICT program) and the other by Dr. Patrick Lagadec, former director of research, Ecole Polytechnique.
The morning session was devoted to discuss how sociological studies on technological risk can improve understanding infectious risk. The afternoon session was dedicated to the conditions and factors of the successful introduction of new pathogens in human.
Planned for about 200 participants, this seminar is designed for decision-makers, experts and scientists interested in human and animal health, social sciences, environmental sciences, prospective analysis, and biosecurity and defense. The Proceedings of the Seminar will be online in the near future.

The 2015 Proceedings of the Val-de-Grâce school Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Seminar are now available in open access on this dedicated site. This seminar, which was held on March 23,
2016, is part of an innovative process begun in 2011, which aimed to foster debate among scientists, practitioners and public policy-makers on the health-related, socioeconomic and political
issues at stake in the area of EIDs. Based on the summaries of the conferences and discussion sessions, complemented by further reflection shared among the participants, six priority
recommendations are proposed herein. These recommendations aim at better understanding, anticipating and reacting to unprecedented health-related events, corollary to worldwide environmental
and societal change.

Seminar History

After six years of existence, and the organization of five seminars - in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 - as well as an additional workshop at the French Senate Delegation for Prospective late in 2014 devoted to media coverage and communication in the domain of EIDs, the Val-de-Grâce EID Seminar holds an affirmed, unique position in the national inter-institutional public health and infectiology apparatus. The product of a report on EIDs published in 2011 by the High Committee on Public Health, involving a few of the members of the initial mandate, this seminar’s purpose is to promote exchange and enlightened accord about the major national and international public health stakes associated with EIDs.
Lessons learned from the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa, and from dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika virus health crises show that, in the light of such events, whose socioeconomic and political consequences are often highly accentuated, due
considerations must be given to a multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond the traditional spheres of medicine and public health. The Seminar Proceedings of the 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015
